We are picking our Friday Small Shop Series back up and I’m so excited! Out of the fun things we do on the blog this series is always my favorite. I love shopping small and supporting families, so sharing these shops with you is such a blast! Today I have Maya, the amazing mama behind Nogili. We first got in contact with each other when we were remodeling Noelle’s room ( aka the never ending project) and she sent Lennon a new bed set and I was HOOKED.
As you all know a cleaner and safer lifestyle is very important to me and my family. When she sent us bedding that was organic and literally felt like a cloud, I just knew I had to share her shop. If you are new to the Friday Small Shop Series, it’s a simply a highlight on the shop owner. It’s a little interview with them so you can get to know the person behind the brand. Maya is the sweetest and so talented, I can’t wait for you to get to know her. When I was writing up her interview I kept thinking…Maya is my spirit animal. She thrives on crazy and antique shops, match made in heaven.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START YOUR SHOP?
I started Nogili after spending 11 years in New-York City, designing interior and furniture. I loved what I was doing, but never felt completely in control. I was serving the desires of clients or bosses, and never fully my own. Becoming a mother just before leaving the big city for my hometown of Tel-Aviv, started this new fire in me, a new notion of designing a world for my own little family where my own design could shine. Quickly this fire spread further and Nogili came to life. Through Nogili I could share my international experience and design point-of-view with the world, and fulfill my new passion: designing an environment for the modern family that reflected my own journey as a designer.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST STRUGGLES SO FAR IN OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Being an independent woman, roaming this world with the risk of losing everything, pulling my hubby (by the ear) into this adventure, turning part of our apartment into a storage/logistics area, answering the phone while making dinner, all of this can be a serious burden. But I strongly believe in this journey and that the struggle will ultimately pay off.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCT?
Between the three collections I created, my favorite would have to be the Bloomsparrow collection. That’s the one that represents the real, inner Maya in the best possible way. The Chinoiserie style had grasped me way back in art history classes at the FIT, and when starting Nogili I knew I had to create a simpler, more naïve and modern version of this style.
If I have to choose just one product it would have to be the Play Canopy. It is a reincarnation of the very first item I designed for my daughter Noga, a teepee tent, which played a big role in leading me to the adventure of Nogili. Also, the Canopy is a piece that strongly relates to my roots in interior design, and to my desire for creating a unique experience for kids in their environment.
WHEN YOU AREN’T BUSY BEING A GIRL BOSS WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
When I’m off girl boss duties I wear the mom boss hat, which is twofold challenging. These two roles pretty much eat up my time. But in these rare moments when I find true freedom I love a drink with my girlfriends, catching a good music show, a good stand-up show or a nice dinner and a movie with my hubby.
WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR CREATIVITY FROM?
I’m a nostalgic person and a devoted dweller of vintage markets (oh I miss the Brimfield Antique Show). Nostalgia, both personal and cultural, has a great affect on me and my designs. And of course, the three sweethearts running around me all day are a huge inspiration. They help me see the world through the eyes of my clients. Last but not least is my attraction to nature and the quietness and peace that it represents for an urban girl like myself.
HOW DO YOU JUGGLE THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AND YOUR BUSINESS?
Well, I drop balls on the floor constantly, while reminding myself that it’s ok to let go and not be in full control all the time. Luckily, I have a beautiful supporting team of husband and kids who manage to love even this erratic version of me.
