As we gear up to close the chapter on 2017 I have all kinds of feelings going on. As happy as I am to begin a new chapter it’s always a little overwhelming. We are faced with this clean slate but the truth is most of us have NO idea where to start. I decided that 2018 is going to be the selfish year of me. I am going to focus on areas in my life that cause me the most grief and by focusing on them and getting them in order it will in return make me a better mom, wife, and friend. You all know I am a big believer that you can’t pour for others if your cup is empty and this year I’m going to share my journey on filling my cup but more importantly how to keep it full.
As women we are a little hard on ourselves (hello understatement of 2017) and it’s time we treat ourselves how we treat others. If our kids came to us tired and ragged we would tell them “you need your rest and to eat healthy foods that nourish your bodies” or if our girlfriends came to us stressed out and on the brink of tears we would say “you need to learn to take care of you! If your body, mind, and soul or drained you are no good to anyone.” Well why don’t we start saying that to ourselves?! Why are we so willing to give advice to others on how to live a full and healthy life but we never take our own advice? When we will learn that when mama is out of whack everyone is out of whack. Well enough is enough…2018 you are MY year and I’m coming for you with everything I have.
What areas am I focusing on this year? Oh thats easy…the ones that make my head hurt: money, organization, MY HEALTH, my home, my faith and my mind. These areas are all so important because they all flow together. When I polled on my social media accounts it was refreshing to see that the same 5 areas were where most woman struggled…but at the same time that was so heartbreaking.
How am I going to do this? Well easy I’m outsourcing. There are things in life I am really really good but there are areas that I kind of suck at too… so I’m going to ask from help. Now you don’t have to hire people if you don’t want to or don’t have the funds but find your girlfriend whose checkbook is balanced and ask her for some advice! Or the mom at drop off who is so organized it almost hurts to watch. There are people all around us that can help you. Below you will find out how I plan on attacking each one of these areas and throughout the year you will learn a lot about them. I’m putting it all out there for you to see in hopes of helping you have 2018 be the best year possible.
This was a biggie because I feel like money runs our life…right? I have no idea at all how to budget my families money and I’m not really sure how this task fell on me. I went from being a single woman who didn’t have a savings account or even a clue what an IRA was to a wife and mom to a family who wanted me to manage all of this money. Hello, I’m clueless! To me more money = more things ( thats a discussion for another day) so this was 100% the first step I needed to take for the New Year. Enter Rebeca Lima, my newest bff. Rebeca is a financial coach and a God send. She helps you create REALISTIC budgets for your family but also helps you find out why you are spending what you are spending. I recently read how a physiologist believed that money is truly the biggest weighing factor on your mental health…if you don’t control it, it will control you.
I am the most unorganized person ever..EVER! It’s a miracle I run a business because it’s just chaos. When I decided my plan for 2018 I immediately reached out to my friend Megan Rogers because she’s the most organized human I have ever met. Lucky for me she agreed to help me..the poor woman. I’m going to have to have Rebeca budget in some wine expenses for Megan during this year. We all have those friends who can help us in this area but if not you can certainly hire Megan. She’s a fellow blogger but also venturing into the world of professional organization…because she is AMAZING at it.
If you are mom and you feed your kids great meals and encourage them to be healthy but place your own health on the back burner, raise your hand. Yep I’m right there with you! My problem is typically time (back to organization sorry Meg you have your hands full) I don’t have the time to get to a gym. I don’t have the time to make myself healthy meals. Blah blah blah… enough with the excuses. Enter Tiffany Glielmi, my fitness guru. I’m gonna tell you a secret I really hate to work out…so Tiffany has her work cut out for her. I’m excited to really dig deep and push my body. I was once a competition level dancer and now I am just a netflix binger. This is the area I’m most scared/excited for because we all know it sucks in the beginning but the end results are so worth it.
We all want that gorgeous Pinterest house. To me my home speaks volumes about my life and I want it to be a place that my kids love, a place that brings peace and fills people with love. My husband is amazing at letting me turn this big old house into my own but sometimes I need a little help with that. I can design a room like no other, some local contractors call me to come consult on their projects because I have an eye for how to lay out cabinets and the perfect spot to stick your sink…but if you ask me to decorate I run in the other direction. I met Alyssa in a WAHM group and she’s amazing. I told her my plans for 2018 and she willingly offered to help me. She will help me create spaces that are gorgeous but functional! If you haven’t caught on yet I crave organization in every aspect of my life! You can even join her mastermind for $49 a month and have a professional designer in your back pocket. I will never stress over a darn shelf again.
I love Jesus, I’m a hot mess right now but I can’t even imagine the disaster I would be without Him. So I’m starting 2018 off with 7 months of different fast that will open up more room for Him to reveal himself and His plans for my life. In fact I have built a little community of women who will also be joining me for those 7 months. I am so excited to see what this does to my life and would love for you to join us. If you want to feel free to join our free Facebook community for this challenge. It’s always amazing to see what happens to your life when you give God some room to work. This was actually the starting point for this whole New Year. I was trying to make more room for Him and saw all of these areas, that if I spent some time cleaning them up, they would give me so much more room for the things that matter.
2017 did bring one amazing thing to the table and that was therapy. If you have followed along I started going to therapy in August after 9 months of brutal postpartum anxiety. Therapy has kind of parted that brain fog that anxiety causes and allowed me to regain some control. While this is certainly a work in progress I am learning some great tools for my toolbox to combat anxiety when it creeps in. I will continue therapy and I know 100% that these other 5 areas I’m focusing on this year will only make my therapy that much more successful! If you are stressed, bummed, anxious…than I really urge you to find some type of therapy. It doesn’t mean you are crazy…it means you are smart. This world throws so much at us it’s amazing what having that non biased sounding board can do for you!
So buckle up ladies because 2018 is going to be one heck of a ride. Join me in a year of YOU!
