Imagination play has a huge place her in the McGee house. Noelle imagination blows my mind daily! That is why last Christmas when her aunt gave her a Bramble Box Props, we were hooked. I was so excited when Morna agreed to do our highlight series because her boxes are packed full of hours and hours of imagination play for your kids!
Tell us a little about yourself and your shop
Hi! I’m a stay at home mom of two, a daughter age 4 and a son age 7 and live in Pittsburgh, PA. I’ve stayed at home since my son was 18 months after we moved with my husband’s job. I had been wanting to start my own small business for a while, and being at home with my kids (once they were past the toddler stage) was a great opportunity to finally do it. I launched Bramble Box (a creative play subscription box for kids age 3-7) in 2014.
What made you want to start your shop?
I had always wanted to have my own business. I like to challenge myself (sometimes too much) and I always need a project. I was also doing a ton of creative play and crafts with my own kids and thought maybe I could make life easier for other moms to share my ideas and creativity with them!
What have been your biggest struggles so far in owning your own business?
Managing my time! I’m terrible at prioritizing the tasks that I ‘want’ to do first, rather than those that need to be done. My shop takes up more of my time than I ever could have imagined and everyday I try to balance time with my family versus time working on my business as best as I can.
What is your favorite product?
I love our Post Office kit. When I was a little girl I had my own post office set, in a little brown box, which I just loved. I even started a family newsletter and had mail boxes set up around the house. Playing Post Office reminds me so much of all the imaginative fun I had as a kid!
When you aren’t busy being a mom boss what do you like to do?
I love playing with my kids and hanging out with my husband. We love to get outdoors, cycling and walking. In all honesty I am also on social media way too much in my free time!
Where do you draw your creativity from?
My brain is always on the go. I think it’s permanently on hyper drive. Most of the time creativity comes very easy to me, then occasionally I have a total mental block! My parents always encouraged my to focus on English, Math and Sciences at school for academics purposes but I love art, music and making things; it’s so nice to finally be able to focus on more creative pursuits! I love pulling together our themed play kits and trying out all the materials with my kids. It’s like being a kid again.
How do you juggle mom life and your business?
Ah! Tough question. That’s a huge struggle. The kids always come first, so once they are sorted out I can focus on my stuff. I don’t want them to ever resent me working. It’s getting easier now they are both in school for at least part of the day. Eventually they won’t be so little and I’ll have all the time in the world, but I know how much I’ll miss their tiny selfs so I make sure to soak up as much as I can right now!
What are some of YOUR favorite small shops?
Basically anything handmade on Etsy! I love browsing the handmade jewelry and artwork on there. I also love small, local stores selling antiques, old shabby chic furniture, signs and trinkets.
